Rainfall distribution

  • Areas of very high rainfall (annual rainfall of 200 cm and above):   which includes the West Coast from Thiruvanthapuram in the south to the Mumbai in the north (average annual rainfall 200 to 400) almost the whole of Assam,Nagaland,Meghalaya,Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim parts of Manipur, Tripura and in North Eastern tip of West Bengal also receive 270 or more,with isolated pockets receiving over 400 centimetres. Meghalaya(The Abode of Clouds) is the wettest part of the country with Mawsynram and Cherrapunji getting 1221 centimetre and 1102 centimetre of annual rainfall respectively.
  • Areas of high rainfall (100 to 200 centimetre annual rainfall) : these include Eastern slopes of the Western Ghats, major parts of the northern plains, Orissa, MP, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu.
  • Areas of low rainfall (50-100 rainfall) :  include large part of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Western MP, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Eastern Rajasthan, Punjab. Haryana and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Areas of very low rainfall (less than 50 centimetre of annual rainfall) : these are deserts and semi-deserts areas include large part of Western Rajasthan, kuchchh and most of Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.
