In recent times, the issue of censorship has been in great discussion. While on the one hand opposing censorship of free expression, on the other hand some people consider censorship as essential because the public sentiments can be provoked by spreading hateful statements without breaking censorship or by breaking the history. Recently a major controversy arose over the film Padmavati. This led to a new debate about censorship in the country.
Methodology of censorship in India:
- Public exhibitions of films in India are governed by the Censor Board (CBFC). After the acceptance of the censor board, any film is performed publicly.
- The Central Film Certification Board or the Censor Board is a statutory body which acts under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India.
- The Central Board of Film Certification governs the public performance of films in accordance with the prescribed provisions under the Cinematograph Act, 1952.
Why is censorship considered to be harmful?
- Censorship creates an atmosphere of fear in relation to free expression. Due to this creative interaction also interferes.
- Due to censorship, only one side of one issue can be found, whereas in reality there may be many other parties. For example, if a filmmaker wants to present to other parties in a historical event, then he is banned by accusing them of tampering historical facts.
- Due to censorship, one statement is considered to be true, so that its other dimensions cannot be discussed. The real truth remains hidden.
If censorship is completely eliminated then the losses arising from it:
- If censorship is completely eliminated then the expression will become uncontrolled. People can spread hate speech in the name of free expression.
- In the name of free expression, information and images inciting public sentiments through anti-social elements can be broadcasted, which can lead to challenge for law and order.
- Most of the historical events of no liability can be tampered with in the absence of censorship, which could lead to violence in society. As recently during the Padmavati film Rajput community came to violence.
Conclusion:
It can be concluded that censorship is necessary, but there should be proper reasoning and evidence behind it. If censorship is used for no valid reason, then problems can arise from independent and constructive expression.
