India is said to be the country of rivers, because from the north to the south, east to west the vast rivers have been spread. These rivers, on the one hand, serve the lifeline of an agricultural land like India, on the other hand, due to these rivers, the country especially the northern and eastern part also have to face a severe flood every year. Due to this problem of flood caused by rivers, important questions arise whether the flood should be given the status of 'natural calamity'.
Arguments in favor of providing flood status to natural disaster:
- Due to the flood, the country has to suffer loss of life and goods every year. The poor have to bear the most losses.
- Floods cause heavy damage to houses, buildings and standing crops. Most of the animals due to floods have to make an unprecedented time.
- Due to flooding, many types of waterborne diseases arise which have to face a huge problem in handling.
- Economic activities are affected in flood affected areas, causing problems of employment to the people.
- In the rehabilitation of flood affected areas, there is also the problem of financial expenditure along with the gravity of the problem.
Arguments in the opposition to providing flood status to natural disaster:
- Flood should not be declared a natural disaster, because on this one side, where the fields get new fertile soil, on the other hand water recharge is also done.
- Flooding is rich in biodiversity because of the flood; nutrients are obtained for aquatic sources.
Suggestions for effective removal of flood problem:
- For the problem of flood problem, strong embankments should be built on the banks side of the rivers and construction activities should be stopped for a certain distance from the banks of the rivers.
- People living along the rivers should be rehabilitated in other safe places and proper financial help should be provided.
- Information technology, such as satellites and radars, should be used for early warnings of flood problems.
- In urban areas, proper drainage system should be established.
Conclusion:
It can be concluded that the problem of flood is certainly a serious problem, but before declaring it a natural disaster, an expert team needs to be formed so that all aspects of this problem can be thoroughly analyzed.
