Recently, the Emergency has been announced in the Maldives. While announcing the Emergency, President Abdullah Yameen said that an emergency has been imposed to curb the occurrence of the coup. According to Abdullah Yameen, the Supreme Court judges wanted to uproot their government by joining political prisoners.
Major causes responsible for the Emergency imposed in the Maldives:
- In 2012, the first elected President of the Maldives, Muhammad Nasheed was ousted. Since this incident, the Maldives is constantly facing political crisis.
- In recent times, this crisis became deeper when the Supreme Court of Maldives ordered the release of nine political prisoners.
- The Supreme Court of Maldives also blamed the cases registered against these nine political prisoners and said that all the cases were motivated by politics.
- Among the nine political prisoners, the first elected President of the Maldives, Muhammad Nasheed was also involved.
- When the current government of Maldives refused to accept the order of the Supreme Court, protests began in the country.
- Given these protests, the Government of Maldives declared the Emergency.
