Recently, statistics presented by National Crime Records Bureau show that crimes against Dalits in the country have increased significantly. According to these statistics, from registered cases in police, it is known that most of the atrocities against Dalits took place in Uttar Pradesh.
That is, about 25.6 percent of total offenses occurred in Uttar Pradesh. In this case, Bihar stood second with 14 percent and Rajasthan stood third with 12.6 percent. Similarly, in 19 metropolitan cities, most of the cases related to Dalit atrocities were registered in Lucknow. A total of 262 offenses have been registered in Lucknow.
The main reasons responsible for crimes committed against Dalits:
- A large part of the dalit still gets employment from the unorganized sector and plays the role of farm labor. Due to this weak situation, they are exploited by people of higher castes.
- Education is spreading among the Dalits and they are reaching the government jobs by taking advantage of the reservation. This is causing jealousy towards the people of upper castes. This jealousy leads them towards crime.
- Due to the Dalit vote bank, they are polarized by political parties. This political polarization promotes violence in the society.
- Due to the spread of education etc., the Dalits are becoming more aware of their rights and are registering the complaints against them. Due to this, the number of crimes against Dalits is increasing.
- The tradition of suppressing crimes against Dalits in rural areas is still going on. It is difficult to register a complaint against a powerful person in the upper class.
Steps to control crimes against Dalits:
- Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act should be strictly enforced.
- People should be made aware about the rights of freedom and equality provided by the Constitution.
- Such socio-economic policies should be implemented by the government to fill the gap between upper class and lower class.
- Vote Bank Politics and Divide Politics should have strict control over the politics.
Conclusion:
It can be concluded that even after 70 years of independence, crime against Dalits in the country continues. They are confirmed by the statistics of the National Crime Records Bureau. These controls can be established by following the above mentioned measures.
