What is the main basis behind the Supreme Court's decision to ban the sale of firecrackers in the National Capital Region? How crackers affect human health and the environment, please elaborate.

Recently, the Supreme Court banned the sale of firecrackers in the National Empowerment Area. The main reason behind the ban was that the toxic gases and sounds produced by burning fireworks also affect the environment as well as human health.

The main basis behind the Supreme Court's decision to ban firecrackers:

  • The main base behind the ban on firecrackers is information provided by the Environmental Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority which states that the quality of the National Capital Region has reduced considerably due to the burning of firecrackers.
  • Following this information provided by the Environmental Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority, the Supreme Court ordered the Central Pollution Control Board to study the harmful effects of firecrackers.
  • But even after nearly a year, the order of the Supreme Court was not followed by the Central Pollution Control Board, which resulted in the Supreme Court's displeasure in September 2017.
  • After the displeasure of the Supreme Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation of the Bureau of Explosive Regulatory and Explosives Protection Organization under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry was reviewed by the Central Pollution Control Board. It is known that the explosive regulator and explosive safety organization have studied the effect of fireworks.
  • The Central Pollution Control Board has forwarded the review report of appropriate study and research to the Supreme Court. Based on this report, the Supreme Court banned the sale of firecrackers.

How do crackers affect human health and the environment?

  • To generate color in the firecrackers, 'barium nitrate' and 'lithium compounds' are used which generate poisonous gas upon burning, causing severe damage to the respiratory system.
  • Similarly, in the firecrackers, copper compounds, aluminum and antimony alfalfa are used. On burning, poisonous gas is produced, which is also carcinogenic along with skin diseases.
  • Most of the burning firecrackers produce harmful gases like sulfur dioxide which is responsible for acid rain. It is known that acid rain causes severe damage to the environment.

Conclusion:

It can be concluded that the Supreme Court has only banned the firecrackers on the basis of proper reasons. Firecrackers bring serious harm to the environment as well as to the environment.
