according to world migration report, 2018 indian diaspora constitutes 6% of the total number of international migrants. foreign remittances to india from emigrants stood at 62.7 billion $ is 2016. therefore recent refugee crisis fuelling xenophobic and anti immigrant sentiments is a cause of concern for india.
other reasons include:
1. highest value of remittances is received from middle east. change of immigrant policy in favour of locals will spell challenges for our diaspora. all gcc countries have changed their policy except uae and oman.
2. a huge percentage of kerala's sdp consists of remittances. decline in remittances has also occured due to skilling and higher education of malayalis who are no longer suited for unskilled jobs.
3. a migrant supports family members back home, who directly benefit
from migration and put lesser pressure on local resources.
how india can cope up with reducing remittances:
1. there are social costs involved with migration. people left behind deal with issues like anxiety loneliness etc. if people are able to find suitable jobs in india, they wont go abroad.
2. sufficient support and employment oppoortunity needs to be given for returning emigrants.
3. it opens an opportunity for india to put into use the additional skills of these people they might have learnt in other countries.
4. diplomatic negotiations should take place for policies favourable to our diaspora for their welfare and to relieve pressure on our limited resources. they should be made to realise the value addition created by people of india working in their countires.
CONCLUSION;in view of the volatile situation created due to right wing inclinations in the europe and middle east, there is a need to ensure the safety and security of our people and also guard their economic prosperity.
