SMART
SMART:
Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo
DRDO has taken up a project to develop and demonstrate a missile assisted release of light weight anti-submarine torpedo system for ASW operations far beyond torpedo range 50-650km.
During august 2018 ,penumatic ejection test of TAL(Tarpedo Advanced Light)dummy tarpedo from canister was carried out at 150 bar which establised the design of safe shear pin failure.
Ejection speed of tarpedo was also estimated during the trails.
India on monday sucessfully flighted tested its indigenously developed SMART torpoed system ,which the DRDO said will be a "Game Changer" in anti-suvmarine warfare, marking yet another milestone in stengthening the country's maritime strategic capabalities, defence sources said.
The SMART was tested at 1145 hours from the APJ Abdul kalam Island, earlier known as wheeler Island ,off the odisha coast. It met all the objectives "Flawlessly".
For (ASW) Anti-submarine warfare operations far beyond the torpedo range. This launch and demontration is significant in establishing anti-submarine warfare capabalities , a defence statement said .
SMART when launched from warship or a truck-based coastal battery, takes off like a regular supersonic missile .
It covers most of its flight in the air at lower altitudes with two way data link from the warship or an airborne-submarine target detection system and provides the extra location of the hostile submarine to correct its flight path midway.
Just when it approches close enough to the submerged submarine , the missile will eject the torpedo system into the water and autonomous torpedo will start moving towards its target to take out the submarine .
SMART has been sucessfully tested on 5th october 2020 at 11;45hrs from the wheeler Island off the coast of odisha.
All the misions objectives including missile flight upto the range and altitude, eparation of the nose cone , release of tarpedo and deployment of velocity reduction mechanism(VRM) have been meet perfectly.
The tracking stations (Radars , electro optical systems) along the coast and the telemetry stations including down range ships monitored all the events.
A number of DRDO laboratories including DRDL, RCIhyderabad, ADRDE agra, NSTL visakhapatanam have developed the technologies reqired for SMART.
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajanath singh congratulated the DRDO scientists for the important feat.
Secretary DD R&D &chairman DRDO Dr G Satheesh reddy, said that SMART is a game changer technology demonstration in the anti-submarine welfare.
Arocket or missile -launched torpedo is a weapon delivary arrangement that was introduced decades ago by the soviet as well as the US navies, said meritime affarirs expert rare admiral sudarshan shrikhande.
He said these were capable of striking at realtively shorter ranges with torpedoes or relatively shorter ranges with torpedoes or even nuclear depth charges.
He said as ship-borne helicopters improved and maritime patrol aircraft became better equipped with sensors ; missile -launched torpedo systems did not find favour as onboard weapon and launcher volumes were prioritised for anti-ship , land attack and anti-air missiles .
However ,if accurate submarine targetting info is available , then a long - range ordnance delivery capability , especially from ashore could be something that will be useful once again .
After all , at this moment , land -based anti -submarine warfare patrol aircraft that can deliver ordance at long ranges are amongst the most effective ways to target submarines.
A supersonic missile capable of a few hundred kms flight can, in theory ,drop a capable lightweight torpedo at the best-known position of an enemy submarien , shrikhande said .
An effective torpedo as the payload was very important "Ultimately the deployment of the SMART system would depend on coast and mission needs of the navy".
India as conducted a series of significant wepon tests in recnt weeks .
On saturday india as tested a new version Nuclear-capable hypersonic Shaurya misssile that as the range 750km, Days after the extended -range brahmos supersonic cruise missile was sucessfully tested.
The cruise missile can hit targets 400km away its range increased from the exixting 290km.
