In the age of digital media, the social media and its various manifestations play a vital role in shaping the behaviours and thought process of general population. There are more than 2 Billion internet users in the world , also due to the internet being based on freedom of expression, there is little hindrances to objectionable material.
Recently it is seen that Social media platforms like Twitter , Facebook etc play a great role in polarising the people, and reaching out to their acceptance of in toleration.
It can be seen as -
1. Terror outfits as the ISIS spread propaganda from the deserts of Syria to European homes only through social media
2. The concept of fake news has become a dangerous trend in effecting people's political and social decisions.
3. Hate videos, communal speeches, communal rumours have caused unrest in parts of the world often violent riots as in the case of Basirhat in 2017.
4. Social media is increasingly being used by Riot mongers and populist leaders who express in-toleration causing unrest at the public level.
CONCLUSION:However, the cause of net neutrality has also emerged and it is important to safeguard the freedom on the internet. Such nefarious activities can only be stopped with proper legislation and framework applicable worldwide. Due to a lack of shared frameworks on the internet and social media behaviour on part of governments and also the media sites, it becomes a case of expoliting the loophole to spread propaganda. A Geneva convention like legislation to regulate the behaviour on the internet is required.
