There are two numbers in English:
{1} The Singular Number - A noun or pronoun that denotes one person or thing is said to be in the singular number . Single means one.Examples of singular number are boy , book , child , cow, girl, pen, tree,etc.
(1) A man is smoking within the premises.
(2) A group of cows is called herd.
(3) Joy is what we want in our lives.
(4) This chair is made of plastic. In these sentences man,group, joy and chair are in singular form.
{2} The Plural Number - A noun or pronoun that denotes more than one person or thing is said to be in the plural number .Plural means many .Examples of plural number are boys , books children , cows girls ,pens trees ,etc.
(1) These chairs are made of plastic .
(2) Children should be given proper guidance .
(3) We should pay all our taxes on time .
(4) Keep the knives in a safe place .
In these sentences , the words chairs , children ,taxes and knives are plural nouns.
