The National Development Council or Rashtriya Vikas Parishad is the highest body for making decision and delebrations on development matters in India. It was set up on 6th August, 1992 to strengthen and mobilize the effort and resources of the nation in support of the plan, to promote common economic policies in all vital sphere, and to ensure the balanced and rapid development of all parts of the country. The Council consist of the Prime Minister, the Union Cabinet ministers, Chief Ministers of all states and their substitutes, representatives of UTs and the members of the NITI Aayog.
Objectives of the National Development Council;
- to secure cooperation of the states in the execution of the plan
- to strengthen and mobilize the effort and resources of the nation in support of the Plan
- to ensure the balanced and rapid development of all parts of the country.
- to promote common economic policies in all vital spheres.
Function of this Council;
- to prescribe guidelines for the formulation of the National Plan, including the assessment of resources for the Plan;
- to consider the National Plan as formulated by the NITI Aayog.
- to review the working of the Plan from time to time and to recommend such measures as are necessary for achieving the aims and targets set out in the National Plan.
- To recommend measures for achievement of the aims and targets set out in the national Plan.
- to make an assessment of the resources that are required for implementing the Plan and to suggest measures for augmenting the important questions of social and economic policy affecting national development.
The National Development Council acts as a link between the central government, The state government and The NITI Aayog, especially in the field of planning, to bring about coordination of policies and programms of plans. The first meeting of The NDC, chaired by the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 8 and 9 November, 1952. 57th meetings had been held so for. Recently, 57th meeting of NDC has held on 27 December 2012 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, precided by Manmohan Singh.
