The most common confusion about the appointment of the Chief Justice is the person who appoints the Chief Justice of India.
Well, the appointment is done by thePresident of India upon therecommendation of the outgoing Chief Justice of India.
As of now, Justice J.S. Khehar, the incumbent Chief Justice of India has recommended the name of Justice Misra, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court to the present President, Honorable Ram Nath Kovind for succeeding him as the 45th CJI of India.
As the CJI is the custodian of the Indian Judiciary, he needs to be very efficient and dynamic. Justice Misra, who shall join the office on 27th August, 2017 is an eminent person. His is better known for his verdicts:

- Uploading of FIRs on websites within 24 hours of their registration, enabling the people to file relevant pleas in courts.

- Hangings in Nirbhaya Case, punishing the four men who raped and killed a physiotherapy intern.
- Judgment on Yakub Memon case (involved in Mumbai Blasts), rejecting his plea for a stay on the death warrant.
- Defamation pleas of the petitioners – Rahul Gandhi, Subramanian Swamy, and Arvind Kejriwal, asking them to face trial.
- Upholding decision for reservations in promotions, demanding proper evidence for justification.
