Stomach

  • Stomach is the widest organ of the alimentary canal. It is J-shaped organ and is located in the upper cleft portion of abdominal cavity. It has two borders called the greater and lesser curvatures and is divided into four main regions: cardiac. (the region into which oesophagus opens), fundus (region next to the cardiac and fundic that produces gastric juices including HCI) body (main central region) and pylorus (last portion that connects to the duodenum).
  • Both the cardiac and pyloric ends of the stomach are guarded by sphincters (cardiac and pyloric respectively), which regulate the entry and exit of food in and out of the stomach.
  • Stomach helps in mechanical churning and chemical digestion of food. It also acts as food reservoir
