Importance of Pteridophytes

  • Term 'Pteridophyta' was proposed by Haeckel in 1866.
  • The study of pteridophytes is known as Pteridology.
  • In Adiantum, whenever its leaf-tip comes in contact with soil, it develops adventitious roots and forms a new plant. Hence, it is also called as walking fern.
  • Salvinia is a rootless pteridophyte. It is also called Sorrow of Kashmir.
  •  Alsophila is tallest pteridophyte. Smallest pteridophyte is Azolla (an aquatic fern).
  • Selaginella (Club Moss, Spike Moss) is a trailing, hanging or erect evergreen. Some species roll up in dry season to form brown balls which may get uprooted and dispersed. They turn green with the availability of water. Such species are called resurrection plants, e.g., S. bryopteris, (Sanjivani booti).
