The Tughlaq Dynasty (AD 1320-1412) PART-1

Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq (AD 1320-1325) :-

  • Ghazi Malik or Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq was the founder of Tughlaq dynasty or the dynasty of the Qaraunah Turks. He was the first Sultan of Delhi who took up the title of Ghazi or slayers of the infidels.
  • He liberalization Alauddin's adminstrative policies and took keep interest in construction of canals and formulated a famine policy. The judicial and police arrangements were made efficient.
  • He gave up the land measurements system and started the Batai system or sharing of crop. Efficient Postal service itias restored.
  • He sent his son, jauna Khan to re-establish the authority in Warangal (Kakatiya) and Madurai (Pandyas).
  • He built the city of Tughlagabad near Delhi and made his capital.
  • Sufi Saint, Shaikh Nizam-ud-din-Aulia said about him delhi is far away.
  • He died in 1325, after a fall from a high raised pavilion.
  • Ibn-Ba-tuta, the Moroccon Traveller who was in Delhi at that time, coined that his death was due to sabotage arranged by his son, jauna Khan (Muhammad-bin-Tughlaq).

Muhammad-bin-Tughlaq (AD 1325-1351) :-

  • Jauna Khan ascended the throne under the name Muhammad-bin-Tughlaq. He was one of the most extra ordinary king ever sat on the throne of Delhi. He was expert in Arabic, Persians Astronomy, Philosophy, Maths, Medicine.
  • He applied his rational and innovative mind in every aspect of adminstration but achieved little success as he was very hasty in nature.
  • Five Ambitious Project
  • The Sultan made an ill-advised financial experiment I the Doab between the Gangas and Yamuna. 
  • He not only increased the rate of taxation but also revived and created, some additional Abwabs or Cessess.
  • The most controversial step was the transfer of capital from Delhi to Deogiri. He renamed Deogiri as Daulatabad.
  • Muhammad Tughlaq decided to introduce Bronze coins instead of silver on which will be having the same value.

Khurasan Expendition (1329) :-

  • Under the vision of Universal conquest, he decided to conquest Khurasan and Iraq and mobilised a huge army for this purpose.

Quarachil Expendition (1330) :-

  • This expendtion was launched, in Kamaon hills in Himalayas alleged to counter Chinese incursions. The attack was successful but when rainy season set in, the Invaders suffered terribly.
  • He died in Thatta (Sind) while campaigning against a Turkish slave Taghi.

​Diwani-i-Koki :-

  • A new department of agriculture Diwani-i-Koki was set up. He built fortress of Adilabad and city of "Jahanpanah".

​Ibn-Batuta :-

  • The famous Moroccan travellers Ibn-Batuta came to Delhi in 1334 and acted as the Quazi of the capital for 8 years. He recorded the contemporary Indian scene in his Safranamah (Rehela).
