Hydrosphere Part 2

Waves :-

  • They are caused due to the friction with the winds.
  • There is no forward movement of water in a wave. When a wave enters shallow water, it breakes. The top of it thrown forward and this is when water moves forward. Water from the beaking wave runs up the shore as swash and back down the shore as backwash.

Ocean Currents :-

  • Actual transportation of water from one part of ocean to another.
  • BeacuBe of difference in density, salinity, temperature of ocean waters, rotation of Earth, shape of coastline and the prevalipre winds.
  • Currents circulate in clock wise Direction in Northern Hemispheres and in anti clock wise Direction in Southern Hemisphere.

Currents in Pacific Ocean :-

(i) North - Equatorial currents ( Warm)  : Flow to parallel to equator line.

(ii) Kuroshio Currents (Warm) : Flow to China & Japan on east coast.

(iii) Alaska Currents (Warm) : Along the coast of British Columbia & Alaska.

(iv) California Currents (Cold) : It moves south ward along the coast of California.

(v) Oyashio Currents (Cold) :: It moves east coast of Kamchataka penisula.

(Vi) South Equatorial currents (Warm) : Flow to parallel to equator line.

(vii) East Australian Currents (Warm) : Flows from east to west in S. Pacific ocean.

(Viii) Peru Currents/ Hambolte Currents (Cold) : Cold Currents near the west cost of south America.

Currents of Atlantic Ocean :-

  1. North Equatorial currents (warm) :: Flows to parallel to equator.
  2. Guineas Currents (Warm) : Flows off the W. Americn coast (hot).
  3. Gulf Stream (Warm) : Beyond the cape Hatteras up to the Grand Banks of New Found land, Florida Currents is known as Gulf stream. From the Grand Banks the Gulf stream moves Eastward across the Atlantic as the Atlantic Drift.
  4. NorthAtlantic Drift (Warm) : Atlantic Drift is divided into 2 branches :-

(A) Norwegian Currents :- The main Currents passes along the Nowway coast and enters the Artic ocean.

(B) Canary Currents :- The south branch of North Atlantic drift flows near Spain by this name.

5. The East Greenland Currents and the Labrdor currCurr flows from the Arctic Ocean into the Atlantic ocean. The Labrador currCurr meets the Gulf stream. The Influence of these 2 Currents PR the famous fogs around New Found Land. (Most busy fishing grouGr of the World).

6. Brazil Currents ( Warm) : Flows along the S. America coast from North to South.

7. Benguela Currents (Cold) : Cold Currents from South to North near the Cape of Good Hope.

8. Falkland  Currents (Cold) : Cold flowing along the south East coast of South America from South to North (meets the Brazil currents).

Currents of Indian Ocean :-

  • The current in the North Indian Ocean differ entirely from the general pattern of circulation. They change their direction from the season in response to the seasonal rythrythm of the Monsoons.
  1. South Equatorial currents (Warm) - Flows to parallel to Equator line.
  2. Mozambique currents :- Warm Currents flowing through the Mozambique channel.
  3. Agulhas Currents :: Warm Currents at the South East of Africa.
  4. West wind drift currents (cold) : Flows to Antartica on North Direction.
  5. West Australian currents (cold) :- Flows to Australia on west coast.
