The Bhopal Gas tragedy occurred on 1984 at Bhopal . On December 3 , a dangerous chemical reaction occurred in the plant as a result water entered into the tank containing methyl isocyanate gas .
A mixture of poisonous gases flooded in the city causing great panic as people woke up with a burning sensation in their lungs . Thousandsof people died immediately from the effects of the gas .
The gas spread within the radius of 8 km . The gas caused coughing , Breathless , stomach pain , burning in the respiratory tract by the morning bhajans of people died .
Many people who survived this disaster suffered from various diseases for the rest of their lives. People still suffer from cancer , tuberclosis , gynaecological disorders etc as the result of the inhalation of the gas .
Between 3500 and 25000 people died as a result of contact with the cloud of toxic gas . Upto 500000 people were injured . Many of the injuries are permanent some of the chemicals lead to birth defects . The numbers very so vastly because there are no exact figures about how many people lived in neighbourhood of the plant . About 100.000 people were living in radius of 1 km around the plant where the disaster happened .
The Bhopal disaster is frequently criticized as the worst industrial disaster . The International Medical Commission on Bhopal was established in 1993 to respond the long-term health effects of the disaster .
