Infinitive :
1. They want to go.
2. They tried to find fault with us.
👉 In sent. No. 1 there are two verb, one with to and other without to, the verb with to is infinitive which are showed in bold letter.
Def. The infinitive is formed with using to in first form of the verb. But sometimes it may be without or bare to also.
Eg.
1. Bid him go there.
2. I will not let him go.
3. I made him run.
4. You need not go.
5. You dare not do it.
6. I heard him cry.
7. I saw him go there.
👉Note: In above sentences bold written verbs are used without infinitive, because (make, hear, see, dare, need, let, bid) are used as a main verb in these sentences hence infinitive(go, run, do, cry) used without to while they are infinitive.
👌Use of infinitive : Infinitive may be used as a noun in a sentnce. And it may be in form of a subject, object and complement of the verb.
Eg.
1. To err is human. (Subject to a verb)
2. We must eat to live. (Object to a verb)
3. The show is to begin. (Complement to a verb)
👉 Infinitive may be active and passive
