Global forest policy

A non legally binding international instrument for sustainable development of all types of forests was agreed to as the global forest policy by all member countries of the United Nations. The policy was adopted by the General Assembly with the following objectives:

1.To reverse the loss of forest cover worldwide through sustainable forest management , including protection, restoration, afforestation and reforestation, and increasing efforts to prevent forest degradation.

2.To enhance forest based economic , social and environmental benefits, including the improvement of the livelihoods of forest dependent people.

3.To increase significantly the area of protected forests worldwide and other areas of sustainably managed forests ,as well as the proportion of forest products from the sustainably managed forests.

4.To reverse the decline in ODA for SFM and mobilies significantly increased new and additional financial resources from all sources for the implementation of SFM.
